1) It is an acronym or an abbreviation. An acronym is when the initial and the word pronounceable example of NASA and UNESCO. Abbreviation is if the new word is not pronounceable as a word, for example, IBM, USA.

2) As I think someone said that the second answer is a memory aid, or to be more accurate (thanks Wikipedia!) A letter from the "first" mnemonic.
